There has been a undeniable shift within the world's response to the #BlackLivesMatter movement. This lull has resulted in a noticeable dip in engagement and sharing of relevant info. I understand that news content comes in cycles, but I really feel it is important that we do not let the momentum die down. The way I conduct myself online has become extremely conscious. Where I did not have much political thought behind my online content before, I most certainly do now.
It is no secret that Instagram's algorithm has a built-in racial bias that is fed from the racial bias it's user's inherently hold. It is for this reason, white content creators will appear on the explore page and within hashtag searches, far more than their Black counterparts. There has been a lot of talk online amongst Black content creators, about the performative allyship we saw during the two weeks of #BLM, which led to Black people being mass-followed on Instagram, in a showcase of solidarity and a way to diversify their feeds. It is is a sad reality, that we must work a little harder to discover the work of Black people on social media. Not just on Instagram, but across all platforms. I decided to write this post for people who wished to continue to diversify their feeds and actively seek out the work of Black creators. It is also a helpful guide for Black creators who wish to use them to continue building these hashtag communities.
